Contains the names of Revolutionary patriots who served between 1774 and 1783 and whose identity has been established by the DAR. The index lists over 105,000 names. Arranged alphabetically by surname; entries include birth and death dates, name of spouse, and type and place of military service. Over 4,500 names added in Supplements.

According to the charter of the DAR the “sole requisite for eligibility to membership . . . is proven lineal descent from an ancestor who . . . rendered material aid to the cause of Independence as a patriot, as soldier or sailor, or as a civil officer in one of the several colonies.” These volumes contain the lineages of the charter members of the DAR. Volumes are indexed both by DAR member and by patriot name.

Reprint of the 3d ed. of 1894. Contains names of officers and enlisted men of regiments, companies, and corps, with the dates of their commissions and enlistments. There is also a list of the officers of the Continental Army who acquired the right to lands, commutation, and/or half pay, as well as the Revolutionary pension lists. Saffell includes some correspondence of Revolutionary War officers, a brief history on the Society of the Cincinnati with a List of the original members, and (on pp. 489-510) the acts of the Virginia legislature concerning bounty lands. The index is in the front of the volume on page 14; there is an extensive table of contents.
