Newspapers and Periodicals

Any material that is published (or is intended to be published) at regular intervals (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) is called periodical literature. Newspapers are a valuable resource for the family historian. They can be considered contemporary documentation or primary sources. Periodicals, also called journals or magazines, are in general secondary source materials.

Because the periodical literature in the area of genealogy and heraldry is extensive, the researcher will need to use online or print guides and indexes to locate the needed materials. Most digital historical newspapers are searchable by full text. The University Library also has a Library Guide to Newspapers, at http://guides.lib.virginia.edu/newspapers.

The following list of basic genealogical newspapers and other periodicals available in Alderman Library has been compiled with special emphasis on publications related to Virginia genealogy. It should be noted that the library has issues of many other genealogical periodicals not included in this listing.

Detailed holdings of periodicals and newspapers held by the University Library system are included in VIRGO, the library’s online catalog.
